What is the HES Grant?
The Home Energy Scotland Grant & Loan is administered by Energy Saving Trust / Scottish Government and available to eligible properties in Scotland. It is designed to help homeowners reduce the upfront cost of installing low-carbon energy systems and improvements — contributing to the UK's net-zero targets while lowering household energy bills.
This scheme supports installations including Air Source Heat Pump, Ground Source Heat Pump, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Battery Storage.
Eligibility
Am I eligible?
- You own and live in the property as your main residence.
- The property must be in Scotland.
- Rural and island households may qualify for higher grant amounts.
- Properties that are off the gas grid may be prioritised for heating upgrades.
- There is no income cap for the basic grant, but enhanced grants require lower income or rural location.

Process
How it works

Call or apply online via Home Energy Scotland to receive free, impartial advice on which improvements suit your home.

A Home Energy Scotland advisor assesses your eligibility and helps identify eligible measures.

You choose an approved installer and obtain quotes — the grant is confirmed before work starts.

Eligible works are completed and the grant is paid directly to your installer; any loan portion is drawn down separately.
- 5
For the interest-free loan, you repay over an agreed period with zero interest charges.
