Up to £7,500 grant + interest-free loan available

Scotland's flagship scheme offers grants of up to £7,500 for low-carbon heating, plus an optional interest-free loan — with enhanced amounts for rural and island homes.

What is the HES Grant?

The Home Energy Scotland Grant & Loan is administered by Energy Saving Trust / Scottish Government and available to eligible properties in Scotland. It is designed to help homeowners reduce the upfront cost of installing low-carbon energy systems and improvements — contributing to the UK's net-zero targets while lowering household energy bills.

This scheme supports installations including Air Source Heat Pump, Ground Source Heat Pump, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Battery Storage.

Am I eligible?

  • You own and live in the property as your main residence.
  • The property must be in Scotland.
  • Rural and island households may qualify for higher grant amounts.
  • Properties that are off the gas grid may be prioritised for heating upgrades.
  • There is no income cap for the basic grant, but enhanced grants require lower income or rural location.

Not sure if you qualify? A free home assessment from one of our MCS-certified installers will confirm your eligibility and identify every grant you can access.

How it works

  1. 1

Call or apply online via Home Energy Scotland to receive free, impartial advice on which improvements suit your home.

  2. 2

A Home Energy Scotland advisor assesses your eligibility and helps identify eligible measures.

  3. 3

You choose an approved installer and obtain quotes — the grant is confirmed before work starts.

  4. 4

Eligible works are completed and the grant is paid directly to your installer; any loan portion is drawn down separately.

  5. 5

For the interest-free loan, you repay over an agreed period with zero interest charges.
