Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Export payments available

Licensed energy suppliers must offer a tariff that pays you for every unit of surplus solar electricity you export to the National Grid — a guaranteed income stream for solar owners.

What is the SEG?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is administered by Ofgem and available to eligible properties in UK-wide. It is designed to help homeowners reduce the upfront cost of installing low-carbon energy systems and improvements — contributing to the UK's net-zero targets while lowering household energy bills.

This scheme supports installations including Solar PV, Micro-CHP, Wind Turbine.

Am I eligible?

  • Your installation capacity must be 5 MW or less (virtually all domestic systems qualify).
  • The installation must be certified under MCS (or an equivalent scheme).
  • You must have a smart meter or a meter capable of providing half-hourly export readings.
  • You must apply to a licensed SEG licensee (your electricity supplier or another participating supplier).

Not sure if you qualify? A free home assessment from one of our MCS-certified installers will confirm your eligibility and identify every grant you can access.

How it works

  1. 1

Once your MCS-certified solar or other eligible system is installed, apply for a SEG tariff with a licensed SEG supplier.

  2. 2

Your smart meter records how much electricity you export to the grid.

  3. 3

You receive regular payments from your SEG supplier based on the export tariff rate agreed.

  4. 4

Rates are set by individual suppliers and vary — it pays to compare tariffs before choosing a provider.
